Billion to be Bet with the Bookies at World Cup

Following the draw for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, an industry spokesman has commented that the tournament will be the biggest betting event in history.

Graham Sharpe from William Hill has predicted that for the first time ever, the World Cup will attract over £1,000,000,000 in bets...

'Every four years the World Cup sets new betting records and with the open nature of this tournament and the enormous hype building up around it that £1billion barrier looks certain to be smashed for the first time'.

England's favourable World Cup draw means that many fans will believe that this time around is when the three lions will finally follow up their 1966 victory - a fact that Sharpe believes would be a nightmare for the best uk bookies...

'For punters an England triumph would be the dream outcome - but for bookies that would be a multi-million pound nightmare - the worst result since Frankie Dettori nearly bankrupt the industry by riding all seven winners in one day at Ascot. We want to see England go very close without quite winning - beaten in the Final on a penalty shoot-out - which we make a 90/1 chance- would do us very nicely'.

England were drawn together with USA, Algeria and Slovenia for the big event, which kicks-off on Friday 11th June, 2010.
