Murray Mania Mangles The Bookies

Bookies up and down the land are licking their wounds this morning, after Andy Murray finally put the ghost of Fred Perry to rest by winning the Men's Wimbledon Singles crown.

Odds for Murray pre-tournament were at an attractive 7/1 with many of the best UK bookies even offering money back on all loses, should the Scot win the whole thing.

After a tense match with world number one Novak Djokovic, the Brit showed just how much he has come since losing at the same stage last season, by sealing a 3 sets to love win.

But such a scoreline does not tell the whole tale - in what commentators have described as a 3-0 win, but a five sets victory.

With odds of 11/8 pre-match many patriotic brit weighed in and with it, the bookies were crying into their satchels with a reported £15M won thanks to the man from Dunblane.

A spokesman for Ladbrokes, one of the UK bookies who offered the money back guarantee, said of the Murray win...

'Murray began the final as the underdog and it seemed that punters were betting with their hearts rather than their heads… but we’re thrilled to be proved wrong.'

With two grand slams and an olympic gold now under his belt, Murray's next stop is Flushing Meadows, where he will be looking to take on all challengers to his 2012 US Open crown.
